(Julie : Mid 30s American): Is it really surprising? Really? We live in a society where it is preached that men and women are "equal" in theory. Ask yourself if you truly do believe a woman is treated fairly in society!
Imagine when a child is sick in day care and the phone call comes in for a parent to pick up the child. Who do you think will pick up the child? Do you think men are more likely to go than women? If you think it is 50/50, you are really oblivious to reality.
This is a clear example of how women are expected to do their duties of being a "good" housewife, mother, obedient individual, or any other title you want to place on her. That is the expectation of society at least in the "business" or "working" world. A man taking time away from work to pick up his child (except for the high income earners or "elite" as Japanese society would like to call it) would not be favorably looked upon. Who are we kidding?
The way these politicians acted is a microcosm of how our society works. Wake up Japan, this is how it is. We don’t like it but what can we do? It is a "man’s" world in this "equal and fair" country whereby there are two nationalities.. That is another story!
