A growing number of tiny satellites poses a greater risk to collision in space

Earlier this year, a single rocket launched from India flung 104 small satellites into space. A second Indian effort in June put another 30 into orbit, each roughly the size of a coffee can.

In July, a Russian rocket scattered 72 more satellites around Earth, like pebbles strewn from a speeding car.

These swarms of small satellites—hard to track and hard to dodge—increase the risk of collision for the world’s vital communication, navigation and defense satellites.

Within a few years there might be another 20,000 or so small craft launched into a narrow band of space around Earth, more than 10 times the number of all working satellites in orbit today.

The growth is spurred by advances in miniaturization, low-cost electronics and rocketry. Companies, space agencies, universities and even elementary-school students are jockeying for position.

増え続ける小さい衛星、衝突の危険増す一方

今年インドから打ち上げられたロケットは104基の小型衛星を宇宙にばらまいた。6月にインドが行った2度目の打ち上げでは、さらに30基の衛星が軌道上に放たれた。1基はコーヒー缶くらいの大きさだ。

7月にはロシアのロケットが、まるで高速走行する車から小石をまき散らすように、地球の周回軌道に72基の衛星を放出した。

このように急増する小型衛星――追跡が難しく、素早くよけることも難しい――が、世界中の人々に不可欠な通信衛星やナビゲーション衛星、軍事衛星に衝突するリスクが高まっている。

地球を取り巻く狭い帯状の空間に、数年以内にさらに2万基程度の小型衛星が打ち上げられる可能性がある。現在稼働中の人工衛星の10倍を超える数だ。

小型化技術や電子製品の低価格化、ロケット工学の進歩により、増加に一段と拍車がかかっている。企業、宇宙開発機関、大学や、さらには小学生までもが主導権争いに加わりつつある。

Japan’s first drive -through funeral home

In 2017, the nation’s first drive-through funeral home appeared in Nagano Prefecture. It allows you to pay respects without leaving your car much like at a fast food restaurant.

Cars pass through the special lane one by one and mourners record their names and addresses on a computer tablet. Families inside the venue can watch the cars from a monitor.

The initiative aims to speed up funeral services and also to give infirm relatives the chance to participate, said the firm’s president Masao Ogiwara.

日本初のドライブスルー葬儀場

2017年に、日本初のドライブスルー葬儀場が長野県に登場した。ファストフード店のドライブスルーそっくりで車から降りることなく葬儀に参列できる。

車は専用レーンを1台ずつ進み、会葬者はタブレット端末で名前や住所を記帳する。場内にいる家族たちは、その様子をモニターで見守ることができる。

この新たな取り組みは、葬儀の時間を短縮し身体が弱い親戚にも参列の機会を提供する狙いがあると、会社代表の荻原氏は話した。

back-to-back 「立て続けの」
They had ordered in pizza so they could follow news updates closely, and because of Mr. Kelly’s back-to-back media appearances.
 

「夫婦はあらかじめピザを注文し、刻々と入ってくるニュースを逐一追えるようにしていた。ケリー氏が立て続けにメディア出演することになっていたためもある」
  back-to-backは「立て続けの」という意味。同義語には、consecutive「連続する」、continuous「切れ目のない、連続的な」、non-stop「連続の、ノンストップの」などがある。他にも、We had three back-to-back meetings only today.「私たちは今日だけで3本たて続けの打ち合わせがあった」のように使う。また、back-to-backは副詞「たて続けに」としてもよく使い、We had three meetings back-to-back only today.としても同じ意味になる。他にも、Strong typhoons hit Kyushu back-to-back.「強い台風が立て続けに九州を襲った」のようになる。
　order inは「（レストランなどから）食事を注文し届けてもらう」、closelyは「綿密に、注意して」。
 
ride ～ out 「～をうまく乗り切る」
He rode out the recession very well, and, in fact, his business actually grew.
 

「彼は、不景気を非常にうまく乗り切った。むしろ彼の事業は成長した。」
 

ride ～ out、あるいはride out ～は「～（＝苦しい状況）を大きな痛手を受けずに乗り切る／乗り越える／切り抜ける」という意味。これは、ride out the storm「航海中、嵐に遭遇した際、錨の上に乗ってバランスを取り、なんとかダメージを受けることなく切り抜ける」が由来で、一般的に「危機的状況を乗り切る」という意味でも使うようになった。例えば、We have to ride out this financial crisis.「われわれはこの財政危機を乗り切らなければならない」のようになる。

 
ビシネス英会話 tangible 「目に見える形の」
Although Jack had a good business plan, the bank was unwilling to give him a loan because he lacked tangible assets.
 

ジャックは、良い事業計画を持っていたものの、有形資産不足のため、銀行はローンの貸付に乗り気ではなかった。
  tangibleは「触って感知できる、目に見える形の、明白な」という意味。語源は、ラテン語tang(ere)= touch「触る」+ -ibilis =-ible「～できる」。他にも、tangible cultural heritage/properties「有形文化遺産」、tangible example「具体例」、tangible result「目に見える結果」などのように使う。なお、tangibleの反意語はintangibleなので、「無形文化遺産」はintangible cultural heritage/properties。
