Japanese makeup artist Tsuji wins Oscars with 2 colleagues.

Japanese makeup artist Kazuhiro Tsuji and two of his colleagues won this year’s Academy Award for best makeup and hairstyling on March 4. Tsuji, the first Japanese to receive the award, shared the prize with Britons David Malinowski and Lucy Sibbick. The trio was recognized for their work transforming actor Gary Oldman into British wartime Leader Winston Churchill for the film Darkest Hour.

“Firstly we would like to give our heartfelt thanks to Gary Oldman. It was a real honor to be on this incredible journey with you. And we would not be standing here today if it wan’t for you,” Tsuji said in his speech during the award ceremony.

Calling Oldman a “wonderful actor, a dedicated artist and true friend,” Tsuji said, “This is a dream come true for all of us.”

Oldman requested Tsuji to be part of the film after seeing his portrait sculptures, including that of U.S. President Abraham Lincoln.

Tsuji recounted the challenging task of transforming Oldman into Churchill, saying the two men looked absolutely different.

Tsuji, who hails from Kyoto, was nominated for the award in 2007 and 2008.

特殊メイクアーティスト辻一弘氏、アカデミー賞受賞

3月4日、日本人メイクアップアーティストである辻一弘氏が二人の同僚とともにメイクアップ・ヘアスタイリング部門で今年のアカデミーショーを受賞した。この3人組は、映画「ダーケスト・アワー」において俳優のギャリーオールドマン氏をイギリスの戦時中首相あるウィンストン・チャーチルに変身させたことで知られている。

「まず、心からギャリー・オールドマンさんに感謝の気持ちをお伝えしたいです。この素晴らしいプロジェクトをご一緒することが出来て非常に光栄に思います。あなたのおかげで私たちはこの場に立つことが出来ました。」と授賞式のスピーチで辻氏は述べた。

辻氏は、オールドマン氏について「素晴らしい俳優、熱心なアーティストで、良い友人です。」と語り、「（今期の受賞は）我々にとって念願の夢である」と話した。

同氏は、二人は全く似ていないんです、と困難とされるオールドマン氏からチャーチルへの変身について物語った。

辻氏は京都出身、2007年と2008年の同賞にもノミネートされていた。

Huis Ten Bosch unveils floating capsule hotels

Visitors to the Huis Ten Bosch theme park in Nagasaki this summer will be able to travel in a futuristic hotel that floats. The press got an early look at two of the floating capsule hotels on March 6th.

Each pod can accommodate up to three people. Inside are sofa beds, a toilet and shower. Steps go up to an outdoor observation deck.

Huis Ten Bosch Co., the theme park operator, will start trials of the pod this month, with an eye to beginning the service in summer, The company plans to have a ship tow the pods between the theme park and a nearby island.

In a program planned by the operator, visitors will check in at the Huis Ten Bosch resort. Then, they will enter the capsule to travel to an uninhabited island in Osuma Bay, near the city of Saikai.

The company plans to open a facility on the island to let visitors fight dinosaurs in an augmented-reality game.

ハウステンボス「移動式水上ホテル」を公開

長崎にある、ハウステンボステーマパークへの来訪客は、水面に浮かぶ未来的なホテルの中で移動が出来る。報道陣は、今月6日に水上ホテル2つの先取りに成功した。

各カプセルは3人まで許容可能。内装はソファーベッド、トイレ、シャワーで、階段は外の展望デッキに繋がっている。

テーマパークを運営しているハウステンボス株式会社は夏のサービス開始を視野に球（状ホテル）の試験期間を開始する。同会社は、水上ホテルをテーマパークと近くの島との間で船に引かせることを計画している。

同社のプログラムによると、客はハウステンボスリゾートでチェックインを済ませた後、カプセルに入り、西海市の近くのおすま湾にある無人島に向かう。また客が恐竜と戦うことができるARゲーム施設のオープンを計画している。

space out 　「上の空になる」
　Judy spaced out during the meeting and I didn’t understand a word she said　
 

「ジュディーは会議中は上の空で、彼女が言っていることはよく理解できなかった。」
  space outは「ぼんやりする、ぼーっとする→上の空になる」。形容詞はspaced-out「ぼんやりした」。例えば、Oh, sorry! I was spaced-out.「ごめん！ぼーっとしてた」のように使う。
　他にも、daydream「（動詞）空想にふける」、absent-minded「（形容詞）上の空の、うっかりした、放心状態の」、dazed「（形容詞）ぼーっとした、放心状態の」、(be) miles away「何マイルも離れて→心ここにあらずで」などの表現がある。
 
Hail from ～ 「～出身である」
Many actors in Hollywood hail from Canada.
 

「ハリウッドにいる俳優の多くはカナダ出身だ。」
  Hail は「ひょう」例えば、There is a chance of hail and snow today.「今日は、ひょう、または雪の可能性があります。」また、hailには「称賛する」という意味もある。People hail him as a hero.「人々は彼を英雄と称えた。」hail from ～の形で使われるときは「～出身」の意味。
 
ビシネス英会話 Stick around 「近くにいる、辺りをぶらつく」
Why don’t you stick around for a while until he returns?
  「彼が戻るまでしばらくいたら？」
  Stickは「くっつく、接着する」また、stick one’s nose in～で「～に鼻を突っ込む→～に干渉する」という意味もある。他にも、stick to～で「～にこだわる、固執する」。

Thomas is 32 years old and he is still single.
