Giant rat recieves Animal Hero Award for sniffing out land mines in Cambodia

A rat has for the first time won a British charity’s top civilian award for animal bravery. It received the honor for searching out unexploded land mines in Cambodia.
Magawa, a giant African pouched rat, was awarded PDSA’s Gold Medal for his “life-saving bravery and devotion” after discovering 39 land mines and 28 items of unexploded ordnance in the past seven years, according to the charity.

First known as the People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals, PDSA started as a free veterinary clinic in 1917 and has honored heroic animals since 1943.

Magawa was trained by Belgian organization APOPO. APOPO works with programs in countries like Cambodia to clear millions of mines left behind from wars and conflicts.

Magawa is 70 cm long and weighs 1.23 kg — light enough to walk over land mines without exploding them.

イギリスの慈善団体の市民賞のトップに、動物の勇敢さでネズミが初めて輝いた。ネズミは、カンボジアで地雷の不発弾を探しだしたことで、この栄誉を受けた。

アフリカオニネズミの「マガワ」は、過去７年の間に39個の地雷と28個の不発弾を発見し、その「人命を救う勇気と多大な労力を割いたこと」に対してPDSA金メダルを受賞したと、この慈善団体は発表した。

「People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals」の名で最初は知られていたPDSAは、1917年に無料の獣医診療所として始まり、1943年から英雄的な動物を表彰してきた。

マガワは、ベルギーの団体「APOPO」によって訓練された。APOPOは、戦争や紛争で残された何百個もの地雷を除去するため、カンボジアのような国々のプログラムに協力している。

New year osechi dishes adapted with coronavirus in mind

Department stores around Japan have begun accepting reservations for traditional Japanese osechi cuisine for the upcoming New Year’s celebrations, this time adapting their products to meet the unique demands of the novel coronavirus era.

Some will sell osechi boxes whose contents are divided into small portions beforehand so as to reduce the risk of possible coronavirus infection.

Sogo & Seibu Co., a unit of Seven & i Holdings Co., will offer a product whose contents are placed in individual cups for sanitary purposes. A total of 50 items of both Japanese and Western cuisine are packed into two layers of osechi boxes. It is priced at ¥29,160.

J. Front Retailing Co. , which runs Daimaru and Matsuzakaya stores, will offer a variety of osechi products that can be sent to relatives living in regional areas and eaten by a small number of people.

While osechi is usually eaten at large family gatherings, the smaller products from the company are geared toward people who cannot attend such gatherings because of the pandemic. Prices range from around ¥10,000 to over ¥20,000.

“I think family members can enjoy the same osechi meals even while being far away,” a J. Front Retailing representative said.

Takashimaya Co. is selling osechi that comes with 10 year-end lottery tickets so that customers can hopefully spend the New Year holidays in a joyful mood. The product, priced at ¥32,400, will be sold exclusively online, with the tickets being sent separately.

新年のおせち料理、コロナを考慮

全国のデパートが徐々に迫ってきた新年のお祝いのため、お節料理の予約を受け始めた。コロナ時代に特化した商品に対応している。

大丸と松坂屋を持つJ.フロント リテイリング株式会社は、地方に住み親戚に送れて少人数で楽しめる様々なおせち商品を提供する予定。

おせちは通常家族の大きな集まりで食べられるが、小さめの商品はパンデミックの影響で集まりに参加できない人たちに向けて開発されている。価格帯は10,000～20,000円くらいのものが並ぶ。

「離れていても、家族全員が同じおせちを楽しむことが出来ると思います。」と、J.フロントリテーリングの担当者は話した。

高島屋は、購入客がお正月を楽しい気持ちで過ごせるようにと１０口の年末宝くじ付きのおせちを販売する。32.400円の商品は、オンライン限定で販売され、宝くじは別送となる。

fall flat 「うけは良くない」
A small picture of a winking ghost may build fellow-feeling among colleagues, but may fall flat among clients.

　「ウインクするおばけの絵文字は、同僚の仲間意識を生むかもしれないが、顧客からのうけは良くないかもしれない」
fall flatは「（冗談、ユーモアなどが）通じない／うけない、完全に失敗する」という意味。他にも、Most of my jokes embarrassingly fell flat last night.「昨晩、僕のジョークのほとんどが、呆れるほどうけなかった」のように使う。反意表現には、crack～up 「～を笑わせる」、hilarious「人を笑わせる、とても面白い」、hysterical「非常におかしい、笑いが止まらない」、too funny 「面白過ぎる」などがある。なお、fall flat on one’s face「顔からバタンと倒れる→面目を失う、完全に失敗する」も決まった表現としてよく使う。fellow-feelingは「仲間意識」
play it safe 「安全策を取る」
To play it safe, the best emoji to send is a variation of the smiley face.

「安全策を取りたいのなら、送るのに最適な絵文字は、スマイリーフェイスの類だ」
play it safeは「安全策をとる、安全第一でいく」という意味の決まった表現。safeは「安全に」という意味の副詞。他にも、You should play it safe and bring a thick jacket with you.「安全第一で、厚手のジャケットを持っていくべきだ」のように使う。反意表現は、take a chance「いちかばちかやってみる」。なお、take a chanceの行動を好む人をrisk-taker「危険を冒す人、リスクを負う人」、gambler「勝負師」、adventurer「冒険家」などと呼ぶ。
ビシネス英会話 higher-up 「上司」
Allowing higher-ups to send the first smiley and only using them with familiar colleagues are both good practices.

「最初のスマイリーフェイスは上司に送らせること、親しい同僚だけに使うようにすることは、ともに良い慣行だと指摘する」
higher-upは「上層部、上司」という意味だが、より一般的に使われるのはboss。ちなみに「直属の上司」はimmediate boss、「一番上の上司」はbig bossと呼ぶ。「上司」を表す語は他にも、chief、 supervisor、superiorなどがある。
なお、「部下」を表す語にsubordinateがあるが、あまり使わない。She is my assistant. 「彼女は私のアシスタントです」、He is my man.「彼は僕の部下です(*manは「特定の仕事を持つ人」という意味)」 、They are on my team.「彼らは私のチームにいます」のように表現することが多い。
