“Spider-Men” delight families in lockdown

Two men who have been dressing as Spider-Man on their daily run have become popular on the web among families in lockdown.
Jason Baird and Andrew Baldock have been jogging in Stockport, Greater Manchester, dressed as the superhero to spread joy among their neighbours.

They have become known as the “Stockport Spider-Men”.

“I’ll do this every day as long as my legs hold out. It’s just to keep everyone smiling,” said Mr Baird.

The 34-year-old, who runs a martial arts school in the town, said his friend first dressed up as the comic book character on a live video call to some of their students.

The next day Mr Baldock went around his estate in the same costume, so Mr Baird decided to follow suit by borrowing a Spider-Man outfit from an acquaintance.

The friends, who are now going on their daily runs in costume, have set up a Facebook page which has attracted more than 1,000 followers in 24 hours.

同市で武術の学校を経営する３４歳のBaird氏は、最初にBaldock氏が数人の生徒のオンラインレッスンの際に漫画のキャラクター（スパイダーマン）で現れたという。

Baldock氏は翌日も同じコスチュームで校内で行動していたため、Baird氏も知人からスパイダーマンのコスチュームを借りて、後に続いた

コスチュームを着てルーティンのジョギングをする二人はFacebookでアカウントを作ったところ、24時間以内に1000人以上がフォローした。

Drinking parties go online as coronavirus keeps people at home

More drinking parties are being held online in Japan as people increasingly stay home in self-isolation to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 and pubs operate for shorter hours at the request of local authorities.

With major Japanese cities set to remain under a state of emergency through May 6 due to the virus pandemic, such online parties are expected to become a new means of communication for those compelled to remain at home but who want to keep in touch and casually chat with friends.

Japandemic Co., a brewery in Matsuyama, the capital of Ehime Prefecture, organized the party via Zoom Video Communications Inc.’s online conferencing platform. It was attended by about 10 people from Tokyo, Kanagawa, Hiroshima and other parts of Japan.

The company delivered its DD4D craft beer to the participants before the event.

“Everyone drinks the same beer and enjoys the same taste and flavor. Zoom is an interesting tool for people who really love drinking to come together.” One of the attendees said.

コロナウイルスの感染拡大を防止するため、外出自粛をする人が次第に多くなり、地方自治体の要請を受けた飲み屋が営業時間短縮をするにつれ、日本では飲み会のオンライン化が進む。

ウイルスの大流行にに伴い、5月6日まで日本の主要都市に非常事態宣言が発表される中なか、オンラインパーティーは、外出自粛をよぎなくされながらも友人と気軽に話し、連絡を取りたいと思っている人にとって、新しいコミュニケーション手段として期待が集まっている。

株式会社JAPANDEMIC COMPANYは愛媛県の首都松山市にある醸造所で、ズーム(Zoom Video Communications Inc.’s)が提供するオンラインプラットフォームであるアプリを通してパーティを主催した。参加者は、東京、神奈川、広島など他県から約10名が出席。

同会社は、地ビールであるDD4Dを参加者に事前に郵送していた。

「みんなが同じビールを飲み、同じ風味と味を楽しむ。ZOOMは飲み好きが集まり場として面白いツールだと思います。」と、参加者の1人は話した。

opt out of～ 「～から身を引く → ～に参加しない」
Mr. Smith decided at the last minute to opt out of a weekend trip to Okinawa he had been planning with friends.

「スミス氏は。友人たちと計画していた沖縄への週末旅行に参加しないことを土壇場で決めた」
optは「選ぶ、決める」という意味で、opt out of ～は「～（＝活動、団体、組織など）から脱退する／撤退する／身を引く」。他にも、opt between ～「～のうちのどちらかを選択する」、opt for/in favor of ～「～の方を選ぶ」などの決まった表現がある。ちなみに、optは、ラテン語のoptare「選択する」が語源。名詞はoption 「選択」。　at the last minuteは「土壇場で」。
flip side 「裏側」
The confident person’s flip side is arrogance.

「自信家を裏側からみれば傲慢になる」
flipは「裏返すこと、指ではじくこと」という意味の名詞。flip sideで「裏面、裏側」を指す。このように、「名詞＋名詞」と並べると、前に置かれた名詞が形容詞化する。なお、動詞flipには「裏返す、ひっくり返す、（ページなどを）さっとめくる」以外に、「（コインなどを）親指と他の指ではじく／トスする」という意味があり、コインの表か裏かで順番などを決める際などに用いる。Let’s flip a coin.「コインを投げて決めよう」、We flipped a coin to decide who would begin first. 「誰が最初に始めるかコインを投げて決めた」のように使う。
ビシネス英会話 boil down to～ 「つまるところ～ということになる」
It boils down to presence, a magical mix of confidence, charm and communication skills that exerts an outsize impact on one’s social stature and ability to climb the ranks, experts say.

「専門家によると、つまるところ存在感や風格の問題だという。自信と魅力、そしてコミュニケーションスキルがうまく混じり合ったそれは、その人の社会的地位や出世に大きく影響する」
boil「沸騰する、（ぐつぐつと）煮える」は、boil downで「煮つめる」、boil down to ～で「～に要約する／される、つまるところ～ということになる／～の問題だ」という意味になる。他にも、It all boils down to just one thing.「つまるところ、すべてはたったひとつのことに集約される」のように使う。　似たような表現にat the end of the day「1日の終わりには→結局のところ、最後には」があり、特に口語でよく使う。

The woman steps out of her vehicle.

Is there a problem sir?

One of my officers told me that you have stolen this car and murdered the owner.

The woman opens the trunk, revealing nothing but an empty trunk.
