Dog desserts: Ice cream company Ben & Jerry’s enters pet food business

Think your dog deserves dessert? So does Ben & Jerry’s.
The world-famous Vermont ice cream company has introduced a line of frozen dog treats, its first foray into the lucrative pet food market. Doggie Desserts, sold in 4-ounce (113-gram) cups, went on sale in U.S. groceries and pet stores early this month.
The treats come in two flavors: pumpkin with cookies and peanut butter with pretzels. Both are made from the same ingredients Ben & Jerry’s uses in its nondairy human desserts.

Ben & Jerry’s is the latest food company to pivot to pets. It follows General Mills, the maker of Haagen-Dazs ice cream, and J.M. Smucker, the maker of jams and peanut butter, among other companies.

Spending on dog treats has ballooned in the U.S., jumping 44% to $5.5 billion (\573 billion) from 2015 to 2020, according to data firm Euromonitor.

あなたの犬はデザートを食べるにふさわしいだろうか？　ベン＆ジェリーズもそう思っている。この世界的に有名なバーモント州のアイスクリーム会社（ベン＆ジェリーズのこと）は犬用の凍ったおやつのシリーズの取り扱いを開始し、利益の上がるペットフード市場に初進出した。

４オンス（113グラム）入りで販売される「ドギー・デザーツ」はアメリカの食料品店やペットショップで今月初めに販売され始めた。デザートは、カボチャ・クッキー味とピーナッツバター・プレッツェルの2つの味で展開していて、どちらも人間用の乳成分不使用の材料で作られている。

ベン＆ジェリーズは、ペット向け製品に参入した食品会社としては最新の例となる。ハーゲンダッツアイスクリームのメーカーであるゼネラルミルズ、ジャムやピーナッツバターのメーカーのJ.M.スマッカーといった企業の後に続く形だ。

アメリカで犬のおやつにかける費用は急増しており、データ会社のユーロモニターによると、2015年から2020年にかけて44％急増して55億ドル（5,730億円）となっているという。

Disney Tokyo to increase ticket prices during peak periods

Ticket prices for Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea will increase by up to 500 yen from March, operator Oriental Land Co. .

The new variable pricing will apply during peak hours, and will take effect from March 20. It aims to avoid crowding during peak hours, Oriental Land said in a news release.

Prices for all age groups will increase during weekends and holiday periods such as spring vacation. Adults visiting at those times will pay 8,700 yen, up from 8,200 yen, with junior high and high school students paying 7,300 yen, up from 6,900 yen.

Prices outside peak periods will stay the same for the time being, the release said.

The parks’ operator already raised the prices for some tickets last April. In October, Oriental Land said it expects a net loss of 51.11 billion yen in the year ending March due to the coronavirus pandemic.

東京ディズニーリゾート、入園料を変動価格制に

東京ディズニーランドとディズニーシーの入園料は最大500円３月から値上げすると、運営会社のオリエンタルランドが発表した。

この新しい変動制の価格はピーク時間帯に適用され、３月20日から有効となる。ピーク時間帯の混雑防止を狙っていると、オリエンタルランドはニュースリリースで発表した。

週末や春休みなどの休暇時期の間、全ての年齢層での価格が値上げとなる。その時期に来園する大人は8,200円から値上がりした8,700円、中学生と高校生は6,900円から値上がりした7,300円を支払うこととなる。繁忙期以外の価格は現時点では変わらないと、このニュースリリースは伝えた。

この遊園地の運営会社（オリエンタルランドのこと）はすでに昨年４月にいくつかのチケットについて値上げをした。10月にオリエンタルランドは、新型コロナウイルスのパンデミックにより、３月を最終とする今年度は511億1,000万円の純損失を予測していると発表していた。

2014年12月に打ち上げられた無人宇宙船はやぶさ２号は、小惑星りゅうぐうに昨年２回着陸した。予想外に岩立った表面にもかかわらず、この宇宙船は無事にデータと土の試料を―地表と地中から―集めた。

科学者たちは、この試料は、特に小惑星の地下から採取された試料は、太陽の放射線やその他の環境的要素に影響されない状態で46億年前のデータを含んでいると述べている。

Ring a bell 「心当たりがある」「ピンとくる」
That name rings a bell but I cannot recall where I have heard it before.

「その名前に心当たりはあるけど、どこで聞いたか分からない。」
  直訳すると、「ベルが鳴る」ですが、何か忘れている人に、「思い当たることがある？」「思い出した？」「ピンとこない？」と聞く時に使う表現です。例えば、昔話をしながら「懐かしいね！」と友達に言ったのに反応がイマイチな時、写真を見せたりして思い出させて、Does it ring a bell?「これで思い出した？」などと言ったりします。また、刑事ドラマで警察官が「この写真の女性を知りませんか」という質問に、「心当たりありません」という意味で、”It doesn’t ring a bell….”というセリフがあったり、返答としても言うことができます。
 
Blow off steam「ストレスを解消する」「憂さ［鬱憤］を晴らす」
Don’t squander your leisure time hanging around doing nothing. Go out and do something active that will blow off steam and increase your energy.
 

「自由な時間を何もせずに過ごして無駄にするべきではないよ。外出してストレス発散になることをして、リフレッシュしないと。」
  Blow off steamは直訳すると「蒸気を噴出させる」の意味で、蒸気機関車が由来の言葉です。蒸気機関車は、ボイラーで発生した蒸気の熱エネルギーを利用して走りますが、ボイラー内に溜まりすぎると、爆発する危険性がありました。その危険を取り除くために備え付けられたのが「Blowoff valve（ブローオフバルブ）」で、蒸気を外に逃がしてあげる機能を担っていました。それがいつの間にか、ストレスで爆発するのを防ぐ（ストレスを発散させる）という意味合いでも使われるようになりました。
 
ビシネス英会話 Cut to the chase「遠回しな言い方をやめる」「ずばりと要点をいう」
As soon as everyone was assembled, the team cut to the chase and began the discussion.
 

「全員が集まると、チームは本題に入り議論を始めた。」
  日本語でも「カーチェイス」と聞き馴染みがあるかもしれませんが、同じ「chase」です。
このフレーズは、映画の『くだらない前置きは飛ばして(cut)
さっさと最大の見せ場であるchaseシーンまで進む』という表現に由来します。
現在では、「前置きや無駄話は省略して、さっさと本題に入る・早く要点を言う」

The Importance of Punctuation Marks

Mr. Dwight was conducting a lecture on the proper use of punctuation marks.

To ensure that his students have effectively learned a thing or two from his lessons, he conducted a brief exercise for them.

He went to the blackboard and wrote,

“Woman without her man is useless”

He called on two students – a boy and a girl – to place the proper punctuations in the given phrase.

To his amusement, the two had different answers.

The boy wrote,

“Woman, without her man, is useless”.

Whereas, the girl wrote,

“Woman! Without her, man is useless.”
【日本語訳】句読点の重要性

ドワイト博士は、句読点の正しい使用について講義をしていました。

生徒たちが自分の講義から学ぶことがあったかを確かめるため、博士は簡単な演習をする異にしました。

博士は黒板に書きました。

「Woman without her man is useless」

博士は二人の生徒（男子と女子）を呼び、正しい句読点を挿入するように言いました。

博士が喜ぶように、二人の生徒は違う回答をしました。

男子生徒は「Woman, without her man, is useless」（女性は、男なしでは役に立たない）。

女子生徒は「Woman! With her, man is useless」（女性だ！女性なしには男は役に立たない」
