The city of Atlanta is growing a solution to address its food deserts. On seven acres of what was formerly a pecan farm in its Browns Mill neighborhood, the city has transformed the land into what is believed to be the country’s largest free food forest.

In the edible space, 2,500 pesticide-free plants and mushrooms are growing, providing fruits, vegetables and nuts for the underserved Browns Mill area.

In the southeast neighborhood, one in three residents is reported to live in poverty, with the nearest grocery store being a 30-minute bus ride away. Throughout the city, an estimated one in four Atlantans lives in a food desert.

Food forests, also known as forest gardens, are low-maintenance, sustainable arrangements of edible plants that are designed to mimic natural ecosystems. Comprised mostly of perennial plants, there’s no need for tilling, weeding, fertilizing or irrigation.

While food forests first became popular in European and North American gardening in the 1980s, the concept has taken off in recent years as cities have started to integrate edible public spaces in their planning.

To date, there are more than 70 other free food forests that have been planted across the US.

アトランタに米国最大の無料食料の森誕生

アトランタのある市は、食品砂漠問題に取り組む解決策を育てている。ブラウンズ・ミルの近隣にあった、かつてはピーカン畑だった7エーカーの土地を、同市は米国内最大の無料食料の森に変えた。

その場で摘んで食べられる空間には、殺虫剤を使わずに育った2,500種類もの野菜やキノコがあり、フルーツ、野菜、木の実などが不足しているブランズ・ミルに貢献している。

南東に位置する近隣では一番近いスーパーまでバスで３０分かかり、住人の３人に１人が貧困生活を送っていると言われている。全市を見てもアトランタ市民の４人に１人は食料砂漠に住んでいるとされる。

食料の森は「森の菜園」とも呼ばれ、自然のエコシステムをもとにデザインされた食べることのできる植物が育つ、ほとんど手のかからない、持続可能な環境だ。ほとんどの植物が多年草で、耕うん、草むしり、肥料やかんがいを必要としない。

食料の森は、もともと１９８０年代にヨーロッパや北アメリカの菜園で人気となったが、街がその場で食べられる空間を設置するとともに、このコンセプトは近年では大きな盛り上がりを見せている。

現在では、全米で７０以上もの食料の森が設置されている。

Kengo Suzuki set a Japan men’s record in winning the 76th and final running of the Lake Biwa Maichini Marathon in 2 hours, 4 minutes and 56 seconds.

The 25-year-old took the sole lead around the 36-kilometer mark and had enough left in his tank to increase the pace toward the finish line as he eclipsed the previous record of 2:05:29 set by Suguru Osako at last March’s Tokyo Marathon.

“I hadn’t thought I’d get a time like this. I’m surprised as anyone,” said the Ehime Prefecture native, whose previous personal best was 2:10:21.

鈴木健吾、日本新でマラソン優勝

鈴木健吾選手は、第76回目で今回が最後となるびわ湖毎日マラソンを２時間４分56秒で優勝し、日本男子最高記録を出した。

この25歳の人（鈴木選手のこと）は36キロ地点付近で単独リードを取り、ゴールラインまでペースを上げられるほど余力を十分に残していて、昨年３月の東京マラソンで大迫傑選手が出した前回の最高記録２時間５分29秒を上回った。

「このようなタイムを出せるとは思っていませんでした。自分でも驚いています」とこの愛媛県出身の人（鈴木選手のこと）は語った。彼の以前の個人ベストは２時間10分21秒だった。

	Born with a silver spoon in one’s mouth「裕福な［金持ちの・富貴の］家に生まれた」
“Aron was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. His parents bought him everything he wanted and sent him to the best private schools.”
	アーロンは生まれつき裕福だ。両親は彼の欲しがるもの全てを買い与えて、彼を最高の私立学校に入れた。
	木のスプーンが主流だった中世時代、生まれた子が洗礼をうける際に裕福な家庭ではgodparents(代父母）がその子に銀のスプーンを贈っていたこと、日常的に裕福な家庭では銀のスプーンで食事をしていたことなどがこのイディオムの語源になったと言われています。「silver spoon」は「銀のスプーン」ですが、銀は当時の「富、財産」の象徴でした。そのため「born with a silver spoon in one’s mouth」は「裕福な家に生まれた」「生まれつき裕福である」という意味で使われています。お金はもちろん、社会的にも地位がある家の生まれというニュアンスです。

	To go from rags to riches「無一文から大金持ちになる」
Actor Jim Carrey went from rags to riches. At one time, he was living in a van, but he continued to work hard and eventually became one of the highest-paid comedians in the world.
	俳優のジムキャリーは貧乏からお金持ちになった。一時はワゴン車に住んでいたこともあったが、一生懸命仕事を続けて、ついには世界で最も報酬の高いコメディアンの一人になった。
	rag とは「ぼろ、ぼろ服」という意味で、いわば貧乏の代名詞です。つまり from rags to riches は、「貧乏が大金持ちに、無一文から裕福に」という意味になり、日本語の「成金」の意味に近い言葉です。動詞のgo や rise と合わせて使われることが多いです。また反対に、「 go from riches to rags 」で「裕福な状態から貧乏になる」と表現することもあります。

	Pay an arm and a leg for …「…に多額の金額を払う」
“The price of chocolate has doubled. I nearly paid an arm and a leg for a small candy bar.”
	チョコレートの価格が二倍になった。小さなキャンディーに大金を払うところだったよ。
	このフレーズは、カメラの無い時代にポートレート（肖像画)を描いてもらう時に、手足まで描いてもらうと庶民では手が出ないほどの高額だったこと、また、戦争で手足を失う兵士達を見て戦争はあまりにも代償が大き過ぎることが、語源とされています。

Difficult Wish

A man walking along a California beach was deep in prayer. All of a sudden, he said out loud,
“Lord, grant me one wish.”

The sunny Californian sky clouded above his head and in booming voice, and the Lord said,
“Because you have tried to be faithful to me in all ways, I will grant you one wish.”

The man said,
“Build a bridge to Hawaii so I can drive over anytime I want.”

The Lord said,
“Your request is vert materialistic. Think of the enormous challenges for that kind of undertaking. The supports required to reach the bottom of the Pacific! The concrete and stee it would take over thousands of miles! I can do it, but it is hard for me to justify your desire for worldly things. Take a little more time and think of another wish, a wish you think would honor and glorify me.”

The man thought about it for a long time. Finally he said,

“Lord, I wish that I could understand women. I want to know how they feel inside, what they are thinking when they give silent treatment, why they cry, what they mean when they say “nothing!”, and how I can make a woman truly happy.”

The Lord replied,
“You want two lanes or four lanes on that bridge?”

【日本語訳】難しい願い

ある男性は、深いお祈りの念を抱いて、カリフォルニアのビーチを歩いていた。すると突然大声で言いました。
「神よ、願いを一つかなえてください。」

天気の良いカリフォルニアの空は、その男性の頭上だけ曇り、とどろくような声で神は言いました。
「あなたはどんな時では忠実でいるので、願いを一つだけ叶えよう。」

男性は言いました。
「私がいつでも行けるようにハワイまで橋を架けてください」

神は言いました。
