“Living fossil” lives 100 years, pregnant for 5

The coelacanth – a weird giant fish still around from dinosaur times – can live for 100 years, a new study found.
These slow-moving, people -sized fish of the deep, nicknamed “living fossils,” follow the opposite of the “live fast, die young” mantra. The nocturnal fish grow at an achingly slow pace.

Females don’t hit sexual maturity until their late 50s, the study said, while male coelacanths are sexually mature at 40 to 69 years. Researchers figure pregnancy in the fish lasts about five years.

Coelacanths, which have been around for 400 million years, were thought extinct until they were found alive in 1938 off South Africa.

恐竜時代の頃から今も存在している奇妙で巨大な魚、シーラカンスは100年生きることができる、と新しい研究が発見した。

「生きる化石」というニックネームがある、この動きがゆっくりで人間と同じくらいの大きさの深海魚は、「急いで生きて若くして死ぬ」信念の真逆を行っている。この夜行性の魚はひどく遅いペースで成長する。

この研究は、メスは50代後半になるまで生殖可能な状態に達しない一方、オスのシーラカンスは生後40年から69年で生殖可能になると、発表した。研究者たちは、この魚の妊娠期間は約５年と算出している。

シーラカンスは４億年前から存在しており、南アフリカ沖で1938年に生存しているのが発見されるまで絶滅したと思われていた。

Mount Fuji opens to climbers for summer

Mount Fuji reopened July 1 to climbers for the summer season after being closed last year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

With virus countermeasures in place, the most popular of the four routes up the 3,776-meter volcano was opened on the Yamanashi Prefecture side of the World Heritage site.

Shizuoka Prefecture, which manages the remaining three paths, said it plans to open them July 10. The mountain will be accessible to visitors through Sept. 10.

Last year, both prefectures closed all four routes amid the pandemic.

昨年はコロナウイルスパンデミックの影響で閉鎖されていた富士山は、今月１日に登山客に対し山開きとなった。

感染対策が敷かれる中、山梨県側から世界遺産として認定されている富士山の頂点3776メートルまで繋がる4つのうち一番人気とされるルートが解放となった。

残りの３ルートの起点となる静岡県は、７月１０日に解放すると話した。富士山は9月10日まで開放となる。

両県は、昨年はパンデミックの影響で4つ全てのルートを閉鎖していた。

その車はピカピカで新しいように見えたし、まさか欠陥車だなんて思わなかった。
lemonは果実のレモンを意味しますが、スラングで「役に立たない、欠陥のある、不満足なもの」という意味があります。基本的には人工的な物全てに使える表現ですが、特に自動車に使われれることが多く、また人に対しても使われることもあります。人に対して使われた際は、「不快な人、魅力的でない人」、という意味になります。
A hard nut to crack　「難しい問題や状況」
I tried to be friendly with her but I was told she’s a hard nut to crack.

彼女にはフレンドリーにしたけれど、彼女は難物なんだといわれたよ。
「a hard nut to crack」をそのまま訳すと「割るのに硬い木の実」のような意味ですが、そこから転じて、「つき合いにくいやつ; 解決しがたいもの」となります。また人を差して、「付き合いにくいやつ」と表現する場合には、「a hard nut」のみでも使われることがあります。「nut」には「頭」という意味もあり、 「Use your nut（頭を使え）」ということもあります。「hard」の代わりに「tough」を使って、「tough nut to crack」ということもあります。

少し調子が悪いようだから、静かにして休ませてあげて。
「under the weather」は、気分が優れず、いつもの自分でないと感じるときなどに使われるイディオムです。気分が悪いと言っても深刻な状態ではなく、勉強のしすぎで疲れたときや、インフルエンザにかかりかけていて頭痛がするときに使われます。この表現の語源は、航海中に体調の悪い船員を嵐の際にデッキの下で休ませて回復させたことから使われるようになりました。「under the weather」=「悪天候から病身を保護するためにデッキ下の船内で休んでいる状態」

One day an old German Shepherd starts chasing rabbits and before long, discovers that he’s lost. Wandering about, he notices a panther heading rapidly in his direction with the intention of having lunch.

The old German Shepherd thinks,
“Oh, oh! I’m in deep trouble now!”

Noticing some bones on the ground close by, he immediately settles down to chew on the bones with his back to the approaching cat. Just as the panther is about to leap, the old German Shepherd exclaims loudly,
“Boy, that was one delicious panther! I wonder, if there are any more around here?”

Hearing this, the young panther halts his attack in mid-strike, a look of terror comes over him and he slinks away into the trees.

“Whew!,” says the panther, “That was close! That old German Shepherd nearly had me!”

Meanwhile, a squirrel who had been watching the whole scene from a nearby tree, figures he can put this knowledge to good use and trade it for protection from the panther. So, off he goes.

The squirrel soon catches up with the panther, spills the beans and strikes a deal for himself with the panther.

The young panther is furious at being made a fool of and says,
“Here, squirrel, hop on my back and see what’s going to happen to that conniving canine!”

Now, the old German Shepherd sees the panther coming with the squirrel on his back and thinks,
“What am I going to do now?”

But, instead of running, the old dog sits down with his back to his attackers, pretending he hasn’t seen them yet, and just when they get close enough to hear, the old dog says…
“Where’s that squirrel? I sent him off an hour ago to bring me another panther!”
【日本語訳】　知恵の力

ある日、年をとってジャーマンシェパードがウサギを追いかけ始めると、すぐに自分が迷子になっていることに気づきました。さまよっていると、ヒョウが自分目掛けて走ってくるが見えました。

ジャーマンシェパードは思いました。
「まずい、ピンチだ」

近くの地面にあった骨に気づくと、近寄ってくるヒョウを背に座って骨をかじりました。ヒョウが飛びかかろうとしたその時、その犬は大きな声で言いました。
「あー、実に美味しいヒョウだった。この辺に他のヒョウはいないかな？」

これを聞いた若いヒョウは、攻撃を途中で中止すると、恐怖感にさいなまれ木陰に飛び込みました。

ヒョウは言いました。「ふぅ！あの年寄りシェパードにやれるとこだった。」

その間、近くの木から全てを見ていたリスは、この情報と交換でヒョウからの保護を得られると考えました。そこでリスは作戦を開始しました。

リスはすぐにヒョウに追いつき、秘密をばらしヒョウと取引しました。

若いヒョウは馬鹿にされたことに激怒し、言いました。
「さあリス、私の背中に飛び乗って、その気の利いた犬に何が起こるか見るがいい」

さて、年老いたシェパードは、ヒョウがリスを背負ってやってくるのを見て、思いました。
「どうしよう」

しかし、年老いたシェパードは逃げるかわりに、ヒョウにに背を向けて座って、まだ彼らに気づいていないふりをします。そして、彼らが十分に近づいたところで、年老いたシェパードは言いました…
「あのリスはどこ行ったんだ？別のヒョウを連れてくるように1時間前に出発させたのに！」
