New cafe in West Bank offers experience of plane travel, but without actually flying

Plane travel is out of reach for most Palestinians in the occupied West Bank. The territory has no civilian airport. Those who can afford a plane ticket must go to an airport in Jordan.
But Palestinians can experience the next best thing at a Boeing 707 cafe in the northern West Bank city of Nablus. The plane was converted into a cafe and restaurant by 60-year-old twin brothers Khamis and Ata al-Sairafi.

“Ninety-nine percent of Palestinians have never used an airplane,” said Khamis al-Sairafi. “Now they see an airplane and it is something for them.”

The Palestinian-Jordanian Airline Restaurant and Coffee Shop al Sairafi opened on July 21. Families, friends and couples had drinks in the cafe below the plane’s body. Many people took photos inside the plane.

The twins’ dream of turning the plane into a cafe and restaurant began in the late 1990s.

しかし、パレスチナの人々は、西岸地区北部の都市ナブルスにあるボーイング707型機のカフェで次善策を体験できる。この飛行機は、60歳の双子の兄弟、カミス・アルサイラフィさんとアタ・アルサイラフィさんによってカフェとレストランに改装された。

「パレスチナ人の99％は飛行機を使ったことがありません」とカミス・アルサイラフィさんは話した。「今、パレスチナの人々は飛行機を見て、彼らにとって重要な意味を持つものになっています」。

パレスチナ・ヨルダン航空レストラン＆コーヒーショップ・アルサイラフィは、7月21日にオープンした。家族連れや友人どうし、カップルが飛行機の機体の下のカフェで飲み物を飲んだ。多くの人びとが飛行機の中で写真を撮った。

飛行機をカフェとレストランに変えるというこの双子の夢は、1990年代後半から始まった。

Japan to reduce use of plastic products

Japan will oblige business operators to reduce the provision of 12 disposable plastic items such as spoons and straws from next April to promote recycling and tackle marine pollution, the government said.

The move is based on legislation that was enacted in June to cut down on plastic waste at restaurants and retail stores. Businesses can choose from among measures including charging for the items and switching to recyclable products.

Targeted plastic items also include forks, knives, combs, toothbrushes, shower caps and clothes hangers.

Businesses that fail to meet the new requirement will be advised or ordered to improve their practices.

日本、プラスティック製品削減へ

日本政府は、翌年４月より海洋汚染に対処しリサイクルを推進するため、スプーンやストローなどの12項目のプラスティック製品の提供の削減を事業者に義務付ける、と発表した。

この動きは、小売店やレストランでのプラスチックごみ削減のために６月に制定された法律に基づく。事業者は、再生可能製品への切り替えやプラスチック商品の有料化を含めたいくつか対策を選ぶことが出来る。

対象のプラスチック製品は、フォーク・ナイフ・くし・歯ブラシ・シャワーキャップ・ハンガーなどを含む。

新しい要件を満たさない事業者は、事業慣行の改善を通知、または命令を受ける。

Every cloud has a silver lining「どんな悪い状況にも良い面がある」

失業しても心配しないで。きっと大丈夫。どんなことにも良い面があるよ！
「silver lining」は単独で、「希望の兆し」の意味で、「Every cloud has a silver lining」で「どんなに悪い状況でも良い面がある」というポジティブな気持ちを表す表現です。このイディオムの語源には諸説があり、どんなに暗い雲でもその淵は太陽で照らされ銀色に光って見えることを希望の光に例えている説や、空を広く覆う雲を生地に例え、表生地（＝地上から見える部分）がどんなに暗く立ち込めていても、その裏側には太陽に照らされて銀色に光る裏生地があり、どんなに悪いことにも良い側面があることを表現しているという説があります。
Go with the flow「流れに従う、順応する」

人生では、計画を立てていないときに良いことが起こるものだ。流れに身を任せて、何が起こるか見てみよう！
「flow」は「流れ」の意味で、川などの水の流れから、時・時代など様々な「流れ」を意味します「流れに身をかませる」や「他人にまかせる」という意味で、変えたりコントロールするではなく、みんながやっているようにやったり、またみんなの意見に同意したり、目の前に起こる自然な展開に身を任せるときによく使われる英語表現です。似たような表現に「go with the tide(=潮)」や「blend in (=混じり合う、[環境などに]溶け込む)」という表現があります。

「Sail cose to the wind」船舶用語で、本来は 「 詰め開きで帆走する 」 ということです。詰め開、帆船が風上に向かって前進する際に、直接風上には向かえないためにジグザグのコースをとりながら遠回りに進行することを言います。
close hauled ともいい、危険と隣り合わせの走行です。このことから、法律や道徳に触れるギリギリ一歩手前の範囲で際どい行為をすることをいいます。

A married couple in their early 60s was celebrating their 35th wedding anniversary in a quiet, romantic little restaurant.
