KFC to launch Beyond Meat “Chicken” in US
Yum Brands Inc.’s KFC restaurants started selling plant-based fried “chicken” from Beyond Meat Inc. across the United States on Jan. 10 for a limited time, KFC said on Jan. 4.
KFC started testing Beyond’s plant-based chicken in August 2019 in Atlanta and expanded to more areas the following year.
In February 2021, Yum and Beyond announced a global partnership to create plant-based menu items for Yum’s KFC, Taco Bell and Pizza Hut chains over “the next several years.”
Major fast-food chains have been vying for partnerships with faux meat makers as they add vegan and vegetarian menu options.

World’s oldest person celebrates 119th birthday
Kane Tanaka, who was born a year before the Russo-Japanese War began and is the world’s oldest living person, celebrated her 119th birthday in Fukuoka Prefecture on Jan. 2.
Tanaka, born on Jan 2, 1893 in the prefecture, has lived during Japan’s Meiji, Taisho, Showa, Heisei and current Reiwa eras, and is hoping to live until 120 as immediate goal, according to family members.
Tanaka was recognized by Guinness World Records in March 2019 as the world’s oldest living person at 116 years old.

back-to-back
「立て続けの」They had ordered in pizza so they could follow news updates closely, and because of Mr. Kelly’s back-to-back media appearances.
「夫婦はあらかじめピザを注文し、刻々と入ってくるニュースを逐一追えるようにしていた。ケリー氏が立て続けにメディア出演することになっていたためもある」。
back-to-backは「立て続けの」という意味。同義語には、consecutive「連続する」、continuous「切れ目のない、連続的な」、non-stop「連続の、ノンストップの」などがある。他にも、We had three back-to-back meetings only today.「私たちは今日だけで3本たて続けの打ち合わせがあった」のように使う。また、back-to-backは副詞「たて続けに」としてもよく使い、We had three meetings back-to-back only today.としても同じ意味になる。他にも、Strong typhoons hit Kyushu back-to-back.「強い台風が立て続けに九州を襲った」のようになる。 order inは「（レストランなどから）食事を注文し届けてもらう」、closelyは「綿密に、注意して」。
ride ～ out
「～をうまく乗り切る」He rode out the recession very well, and, in fact, his business actually grew.

ride ～ out、あるいはride out ～は「～（＝苦しい状況）を大きな痛手を受けずに乗り切る／乗り越える／切り抜ける」という意味。これは、ride out the storm「航海中、嵐に遭遇した際、錨の上に乗ってバランスを取り、なんとかダメージを受けることなく切り抜ける」が由来で、一般的に「危機的状況を乗り切る」という意味でも使うようになった。例えば、We have to ride out this financial crisis.「われわれはこの財政危機を乗り切らなければならない」のようになる。

ジャックは、良い事業計画を持っていたものの、有形資産不足のため、銀行はローンの貸付に乗り気ではなかった。
tangibleは「触って感知できる、目に見える形の、明白な」という意味。語源は、ラテン語tang(ere)= touch「触る」+ -ibilis =-ible「～できる」。他にも、tangible cultural heritage/properties「有形文化遺産」、tangible example「具体例」、tangible result「目に見える結果」などのように使う。なお、tangibleの反意語はintangibleなので、「無形文化遺産」はintangible cultural heritage/properties。

A woman in a grocery store happens upon a grandfather and his poorly behaved 3 year-old grandson.
It’s obvious to her that the grandfather has his hands full with the child screaming for candy in the candy aisle, cookies in the cookie aisle and etc.
Meanwhile, Gramps is working his way around, saying in a controlled voice, “Easy, Albert, we won’t be long – easy, boy.”
Another outburst and she hears Gramps calmly say, “It’s ok, Albert, just couple more minutes and we’ll be out of here. Hang in there boy.”
At the checkout, the little terror is throwing items out of the cart, and Gramps again, in a controlled voice, is saying, “Albert, Albert, relax buddy, don’t’ get upset. We’ll be home in 5 mins. Stay cool Albert.”
Very impressed, the woman goes outside where Gramps is loading his groceries and the boy in the car.
“You know, sir, it’s none of my business, but you were amazing in there. I don’t know how you did it. That whole time, you kept your composure, and no matter how loud and disruptive he got, you just calmly kept saying things would be ok. Albert is very lucky to have you as his grandpa.”
“Thanks, lady,” said Gramps. “But I’m Albert – that little mongrel’s name is Carl and I’m going to drink a lot of whiskey when I get home.”

ある女性はスーパーで、行儀の悪い3歳の男の子とその子のおじいさんに出くわしました。
男の子は、キャンディーやクッキー売り場を通るたびに商品を欲しがっては叫んで、おじいさんが手を焼いているのは一目瞭然でした。
一方おじいさんは、どうにかやる過ごしているようで、落ち着いた声で「落ち着くんだ、アルバート、長くはならないから、落ちつくんだ。」

レジでは、男の子はとうとう買い物カゴの商品を投げ始めました。それでもおじいさんは落ち着いた声で言いました。 「アルバート、アルバート、落ち着くんだぞ。怒るんじゃないぞ。5分で家に着くんだから。落ち着くんだ、アルバート。」
ずっと見ていた女性は非常に感激して、おじいさんが男の子と荷物を車に乗せているところにやってきて言いました。
「おじいさま、私は何も言う立場でもないのですが、とってもご立派でした。どうしたらあのような態度がとれるのかとっても感心しました。その子がどんなに大声を出してもずっと、穏やかな声で大丈夫だよと言って、冷静さを失いませんでしたね。アルバートはこんなおじい様を持って幸せだわ。」
「お嬢さんありがとう」 おじいさんは言いました。 「ただ、アルバートとは私のことなんですがね。あの嫌なヤツの名前はカール。私は家に帰ったらもちろんたくさんのウイスキーを飲みますよ。」
