Emma Watson Stars In Sustainable Fashion Photoshoot For Elle UK

Emma Watson has been named Elle UK’s ‘Woman spunof the Year’ due to her “powerful campaigning for gender equality” and we’d like to take this moment to also celebrate her work promoting sustainable fashion.

Watson will be presented with the award at The ELLE Style Awards on 13 February and to celebrate the honour she stars in the March issue’s main fashion story, dressed solely in sustainably-made items.

The shoot, created with Livia Firth’s ethical dressing ideas consultancy, Eco-Age, aimed to showcase brands that are reducing the impact they have on people and the planet, including vintage clothing.

Watson previously took part in Eco-Age’s Green Carpet Challenge at the 2016 Met Gala, wearing a Calvin Klein Collection gown made from Newlife fabric, a yarn engineered from used plastic bottles sourced, processed and spun in Italy, with zippers made from recycled plastic.

イギリス出身の女優、エマ・ワトソンが、「性差別を無くすために力強い取り組みをした」ことで、ELLE UKの2016年ウーマン・オブ・ザ・イヤーに選ばれた。彼女は、素材や製法が環境に配慮されている「サステイナブル・ファッション」を広める取り組みを熱心に行っていることでも知られている。

エマは2月13日に行われるELLEスタイル・アワードで表彰される予定だ。ELLE UKの3月号でも、サステイナブルなアイテムだけを使った彼女の特集が組まれている。

また、この撮影は、リヴィア・ファース率いる、人間や地球に与える影響を少なくしようとするエシカルファッションのコンサルタント会社「Eco-Age」が監修した。

エマ・ワトソンは2016年のメット・ガラで行われた、Eco-Ageのグリーン・カーペット・チャレンジでカルバン・クライン・コレクションのガウンで現れた。この服は、使用済みのペットボトルを原料で織られたイタリアの「Newlife」の生地と、リサイクルしたプラスチックから作られたジッパーが使われている。

Sony subsidiary to release programming learning kit

Sony Global Education Inc, which runs an education-related business, will release a programming learning kit for children on Saturday. The kit, Koov, enables users to make a robot by freely combining motors, sensors and blocks and move it by using self-made software.

With the kit, children can experience manufacturing while playing. The Koov consists of (1) blocks that can be used to form various shapes and mechanisms, (2) electronic parts such as sensors, motors and cables and (3) special learning applications that run on personal computers, tablet computers, etc.

There are few kinds of blocks in the aim of enhancing the creativity of children. The blocks can realize various shapes when they are combined.

The learning applications include Robot Recipe, which offers operation programs and instructions for making robots, and Learning Course, which systematically teaches programming and how to combine blocks. It is also possible to make a robot and software for the robot without such help.

ソニーの子会社、プログラミングキットを発表

教育関連事業を営むソニー・グローバル・エデュケーション・インクは、土曜日に子ども向けプログラミング学習キットをリリースする。キットKoovは、モーター、センサー、ブロックを自由に組み合わせ、自作のソフトウェアを使用してロボットを動かすことでロボットを作ることができるという。このキットを使用すると、子供は遊んでいる間に製造過程を体験することが出来る。

Koovは、次のの3点で構成されている。
（1）様々な形状やメカニズムを形成するためのブロック、（2）センサー、モーターやケーブルなどの電子部品、（3）パーソナルコンピュータ、タブレットコンピュータなどで動作する特別な学習アプリケーション。子供たちの創造性を高めるため、ブロックの（形の）種類は限られている。

「学生たちの行動が何とよく見えることか」
  up toは「やっていて、とりかかっていて、～に従事して、（よからぬことを）たくらんで」という意味。例文では、what the students are up toの部分を「学生たちがやっていること→学生たちの行動」と意訳。他にも、What are you up to this summer?「今年の夏はどうするの？」、Do you have any idea what she is up to?「彼女が何をたくらんでいるのかに気づいている？」のように使う。revelationは「暴露、思いがけないこと」。
 
be bombarded with ～　「～の砲火を受ける→～に邪魔される」

  bombardは「攻める、責める」という意味で、受動態のbe bombarded with ～は「～で攻められる／責められる」。例文では「～に邪魔される」と意訳。能動態で用いると、He bombarded me with difficult questions.「彼は私を難しい質問攻めにした」のようになる。ちなみに「質問攻め」を表す表現には、an avalanche of questions、a blizzard of questions、a barrage of questions、などがある。avalancheは「なだれ、殺到」、blizzardは「暴風雪、殺到」、 barrageは「弾幕、連発」。
 
ビシネス英会話 roll their eyes 「目をむく」
No doubt the students will roll their eyes, mutter that I’m a Luddite, and present arguments showing why I’m wrong.

  roll one’s eyesは文字通りで「目をぐるりと動かす」だが、disapproval「不賛成」、indifference 「無関心」、 frustration「不満」の意を含む。例えば、My friend rolled her eyes and smirked slightly.「私の友人は、目をぐるりと動かし、かすかにニヤッと笑った」のように使う。no doubt～は「疑いなく～、確かに～」、Ludditeは「技術革新反対主義者→ラッダイト（機械打ち壊し運動）推進者」。ラッダイトは、産業革命時代に機械打ち壊しを集団的に行った英国の手工業(労働)者のことで、そこから転じて、(一般に)技術革新反対主義者を指すようになった。

THE SILENT TREATMENT

A man and his wife were having some problems at home and were giving each other the silent treatment.

Suddenly, the man realized that the next day, he would need his wife to wake him at 5:00 AM for an early morning business flight.
Not wanting to be the first to break the silence (and LOSE), he wrote o n a piece of paper, “Please wake me at 5:00 AM.” He left it where he knew she would find it.

The next morning, the man woke up, only y to discover it was 9:00 AM and he had missed his flight. Furious, he was about to go and see why his wife hadn’t wakened him, when he noticed a piece of paper by the bed.

The paper said, “It is 5:00 AM. Wake up.”

翌朝、男性が目覚めたのは朝の9時、乗る予定の飛行機も逃してしまった。怒り心頭した男性は、妻にどうして起こしてくれなかったのか問いただしにいこうとしたときベッドのそばのメモに気がつき、メモにはこう書いてありました。
