Australian diners use water pistols to keep seagulls away

There are too many seagulls in the waterfront area of Perth, the capital of Western Australia. So, a waterfront restaurant is arming its customers with water pistols.

Toby Evan, the owner of 3sheets restaurant, said the seagull problem was very bad. He was worries that the birds were scaring customers away. The restaurant has several tables outside. Something had to be done to keep seagulls away, Evan said.

“it was bad, it was bad. I think it’s the time of year,” he told the local television. “Now they are getting cheekier and cheekier. The seagulls often look for food scraps on the tables of restaurants. Evans has put a water pistol on each table outside his restaurant. Customers praised the move.

“We didn’t have to throw anything at them or run for cover,” said one customer.

豪州のレストラン、カモメ対策に水鉄砲

　オーストラリア西部の都市であるパースの沿岸部にはカモメが大量のカモメがいる。そのため、あるレストランでは水鉄砲を利用客に装備する試みを始めている。

　3Sheetsレストランのオーナーであるトビー・エバンズ氏はカモメの問題は非常に悪化しているという。カモメが利用客を怖がらせて遠ざけているのではないかと懸念していた。レストランは屋外にも席があり、カモメを遠ざけるための何かがされなければならなかった、と同氏は話した。

　「本当に、本当に良くなかったんだ。カモメの時期でもあり、どんどん厚かましくなってきている」と、地方テレビで話した。カモメは通常レストランのテーブルに残った、食べ残りを狙っている。エバンス氏はレストランの全ての屋外席に水鉄砲を置き始めた。利用客はその対策に賛同している。

「（何かをカモメに投げなくて済むし、安全なところに逃げる必要もなかった。」と、一人の利用客は話した。

Japanese Least bothered by fellow passengers

If a fellow plane passenger snores or puts their seat back too far, a Japanese passenger might not complain, according to an online survey by Expedia.com.

According to the survey, 39 percent of Japanese wouldn’t say anything about an annoying passenger. That was the highest ratio for any of the counties in the survey. Indians were the least patient, at 11 percent.

The Expedia survey ran for two months through March. Japanese were the most understanding about snoring. Only 37 percent of Japanese agreed that it was OK to wake a snoring passenger. For Indians, the ratio was 71 percent.

Japanese also didn’t mind if people in front of them put their seat back. Only 7 percent said they would ask them to bring their seat forward. That was the lowest among the countries in the survey.

機内の迷惑行為にも我慢強いのは日本人

Expedia.comによると、機内で一緒に乗り合わせた客のいびきや席の倒しすぎがあっても、日本人客は文句を言うことが少ないようだ。

調査によると、39％の日本人旅客は迷惑な他の客に対して何も言わないという結果が出た。これは同内容の質問に回答した他国の利用者に比べて、一番大きい割合だ。

同社の調査は、3月を含め2か月間行われ、いびきに対しての理解度は日本人客が一番高った。いびきをかいている客を起してよいと答えた日本人は、37％にとどまったのに対し、インド人は71％がどいうを示した。

日本人は、前列の客が席を倒しても気にしないようで、席をもとに戻すように言う人は7％のみだった。これは調査をした国の中で最も低い割合だ。

  mindlesslyは「無分別に、無思慮に、考えもなしに」という意味。他にも、I was mindlessly browsing the Internet last night for hours.「私は昨晩考えもなく、何時間もインターネットを閲覧していた」、He was staring at the ceiling mindlessly.「彼は何も考えずにただ天井を見つめていた」のように使う。browseは「インターネットを閲覧する」。 mindlesslyの同義語は、senselessly「意味もなく、愚かに」、stupidly、foolishly、idiotically「間抜けにも、愚かに」、unthinkingly「何も考えずに」、thoughtlessly「軽率に、よく考えないで」など。 an awful lotは「実に、とんでもなく」、lab ratは「実験用ネズミ」。
 
gimmick 「小物」
Schools have embraced marketing gimmicks like “Class of ’18” bumper stickers to rally students around their graduation year.
  「2018年度卒業見込みの学生向けに、自覚を持たせようと『18年度組』と書かれたバンパー・ステッカーのようなマーケティング用の小物を販売している大学もある」
  gimmickは「（人の目を引くための）工夫、仕掛け、新案品、（巧妙に作られた）小物」という意味。特に、marketing gimmickは「（顧客を引きつけるための）仕掛け、装置、方法」を指す。同義語は、trick「策略、たくらみ」、ploy「（相手を出し抜くための）策略」、stunt「妙技、離れ業」など。attention grabber「注意を引くもの」と表現することもできる。
　他にも、The idea may be only the latest gimmick.「その考えは、単なる最新の策略かもしれない」、It sounds like a great sales gimmick to me. 「それは素晴らしい販売戦略のように私には聞こえる」のように使う。
　embraceは「進んで活用する」。
 
ビシネス英会話 so-and-so 「誰々」

  「男児の場合は、関係性攻撃を受けても、それが彼らの記憶からすぐに消えてしまうようだと述べた。そして「女児の場合、私の所に来て、『幼稚園のとき、誰々にこんなことをされたのを覚えている』と打ち明ける子供たちもいる」と、彼女は話した」
  so-and-soは「誰それ、誰々、何某」。特定の個人名を出したくない、あるいは出す必要のないときに用いる表現。Mr. /Ms.so-and-so とすると、それが男性、女性を特定できる。
