The winner of the world championship pumpkin weight-off was so heavy that the man who grew it had to use a backhoe to lift it.
|
Oregon commercial pilot Steve Daletas won the annual contest in Half Moon Bay, California, on Oct 8 with a monster pumpkin that weighed 984 kg.
“This all started with one special seed and a whole lot of work,†said Daletas, who raises giant pumpkins as a hobby. “We were really blessed it was sunny almost every day.â€
It was the second-heaviest pumpkin ever weighed at the 44-year-old California even, but it was still far from a U.S record. That was set just last month when grower in New Hampshire produced a pumpkin weighing more than 1.130 kg.
Daletas, 58, needed a backhoe to place his massive pumpkin on a pick up truck for the drive to California. He said he strapped the pumpkin down and drove “below the speed limit†for 12 hours to get to the contest.

Hundreds of fish dealers on forklifts and trucks rose before dawn in Tokyo on Oct. 7 to join a big exodus of vendors as the world-famous Tsukiji market relocated to a new site.
|
In small vehicles and the market’s famed “turret trucks†– one man flatbeds with a barrel-shaped steering column at the front – they drove out of the Tsukiji site one last time, headed for Toyosu, the market’s new home.
The main bridge out from the market was closed to traffic for the move, with security guards in place to wave along the leaving wholesalers, who drove in orderly lines between safety cones topped with flashing red and green lights.
Hundreds of the 900 businesses that once handled 480 kinds of seafood worth 1.6 billion every day – as well as 270 types of fruits and vegetables – were relocating.
A total of 2600 turret trucks and forklifts were set to drive about 2.3 kilometers from Tsukiji to the new site over a period of five days, according to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government.
The 83 year-old market’s move has been in the works for decades, prompted by its run-down state, but it had been a lengthy and controversial process, hindered by pollution rows and construction delays.

A night out
An Irishman has been drinking at a pub all night. The bartender finally says that the bar is closing. So the Irishman stands up to leave and falls flat on his face.
He tries to stand one more time, same result.
He figures he’ll crawl outside and get some fresh air and maybe that will sober him up.
Once outside he stands up and falls flat on his face. So he decides to crawl 4 miles home and when he arrives at the door, he stands up and falls flat on his face. He crawls through the door into his bedroom.
When he reaches his bed he tries on more time to stand up. This time he manages to pull himself upright but he quickly falls right into bed and is sound asleep as soon as his head hits the pillow.
He awakens the next morning to his wife standing over him shouting at him.
“so, you’ve been out drinking againâ€
What makes you say that? he asked as he puts on an innocent look.
“The pub called, you left your wheelchair there againâ€
