British Airways flight lands in Scotland instead of Germany

British Airway has apologized after a flight from London to Dusseldorf, Germany, landed in Edinburgh by mistake. Edinburgh is about 845 km from Dusseldorf.
The detour happened after a subcontracted crew used the wrong flight plan. British Airways said the 96-seat jet was operated by German charter firm WDL Aviation on behalf of BA CityFlyer.

British Airways said it was trying to find out why the wrong flight plan was used.

“We have apologized to customers for this interruption to their journey and will be contacting them all individually.” WDL Aviation said it flew the passengers to Dusseldorf after their unscheduled stopover in the Scottish capital.

“We are working closely with authorities to investigate how the unfortunate mix-up of flight schedules could happen,” it said in a statement.

WDL is owned by Berlin-based logistics firm Zeitfracht Group.

行き先を間違えた英旅客機 ドイツのはずがスコットランドに着陸

ブリティッシュ・エアウェイズは、ロンドン発ドイツ・デュッセルドルフ行きのフライトが誤ってエディンバラに着陸したことで謝罪した。エディンバラはデュッセルドルフから約845キロ離れている。

委託されたクルーが誤った飛行計画を使用し、この遠回りが発生した。ブリティッシュ・エアウェイズは、96席のジェット機はBAシティフライヤーに代わり、ドイツのチャーター会社WDLアビエーションによって運航されていたと述べた。

ブリティッシュ・エアウェイズは、なぜ誤った飛行計画が使用されたのかを究明しているという。

「お客様の旅行にこのような支障が出てしまったことについて当社はお客様に謝罪し、全てのお客様に個別にご連絡します」。

「運航スケジュールにこのようなまったく不幸な混乱がいかにして発生したのか、当局と緊密に連携して調査している」と、同社は声明で発表した。

Reiwa: Japan reveals new era name ahead of Emperor’s abdication

In a much-awaited moment that heralded a new chapter in Japan’s history, Chief Cabinet secretary Yoshihide Suga announced April 1st that the new Imperial era will be named Reiwa, taking one of the final steps toward initiating the nation’s first Imperial succession in three decades.

Suga, who displayed a placard showing the kanji for the new era, said the name was formulated based on a poem from Manyoshu, the oldest existing compilation of Japanese poetry.

The first character represents “good fortune,” while the second can be translated as “peace” or “harmony.”

This is the first time for the kanji of a new era to be taken from Japanese classical literature. Prior era names had kanji from Chinese literature.

The poem in question described an ume Japanese apricot flower in full bloom in early spring after surviving a cold winter.

The new era will start on May 1st when Crown Prince Naruhito ascends to the Chrysanthemum Throne following the abdication of his father, Emperor Akihito, a day earlier.

新元号は「令和」

日本の歴史の新たな一幕の到来を告げる待望の瞬間に、菅義偉内閣官房長官は4月1日、新しい天皇の時代は「令和」と名付けられると発表し、30年ぶりの皇位継承を始める最終段階の１つを進めた。

新しい時代を表す漢字を示した紙を掲げた菅内閣官房長官は、新元号は日本に現存する最古の詩集『万葉集』の一首に基づいて考案されたと語った。

新元号の一文字目は「幸運」を表し、二文字目は「平和」や「調和」として解釈できる。

日本の古典文学から元号の漢字が選ばれたのは今回が初めてだ。これまでの元号には漢文から漢字が使われてきた。

当該の詩は、凍てつく冬を乗り越えて早春に満開を迎えた梅の花を歌っている。

新しい時代は5月1日に始まり、この日、徳仁皇太子が皇位を継承し、その前日には父の明仁天皇が退位する。

「令和」の時代の到来で、1989年1月8日に始まった30年以上の平成（「平和を成し遂げる」の意味」の時代は終わる。

No strings attached「無条件の、制限のない」
The company will let you try the product for free with no strings attached.

「その会社は無条件で商品を3か月間試させてくれる。」
「string」は、一般に「rope」よりも細く、「thread」よりも太い「ヒモ」を指します。「attached」はそのまま「くっつけられた、付着した」の意味で、直訳すると「ヒモがくっつていない」となります。「string」にはもう一つ「pull the strings（状況をコントロールする、裏で操る）」というよく使われる表現があります。「strings」がついていると、何か相手の利益となる別の思惑や利益があることが多いことから、「no strings attached（紐がくっついていないよ、裏の思惑わないよ）」と使われたことから「無条件の、制限のない」となった。
Go the extra mile「一層の努力をする」

「利用客に最高の環境を整えるため、我々は一層の努力をする。」
「mile」は、アメリカで一般的に使われる距離・物の速さを表す単位で、「go the extra mile」のもともとの意味は「期待以上のことする（1マイル余分に行く）」。期待を越えるためには努力が必要なので、「一層の努力をする」としばしば意訳される。カスタマーサービスや顧客の満足度や信頼を得たいときなどによく使われる表現。
ビシネス英会話 Not going to fly 「上手くいかない、無理だ」
I know you’ve put a lot of work into this proposal, but this idea is not going to fly.

「あなたがこの提案の作成に多くの努力をしたことはわかりますが、このアイデアは上手くいかないでしょう。」
「fly」はもともと「飛ぶ」の意味ですが、「飛ぶ」＝「飛ぶことに成功する」から「成功する」の意味でも良く使われます。「fly」を使ったビジネス表現に「fly off the shelves（飛ぶように売れる）」があります。商品（在庫）の棚に置くや否やすぐに売れてしまう様子が、まるで商品が飛んでいくように見えると考えられたためです。

When the debt collector is most needed…

An elderly couple was flying to Hawaii for a two-week vacation to celebrate their 50th anniversary.

Suddenly, the captain announced over the public address system,

“Ladies and gentlemen, I’m sorry to say that I have some bad news. our engines are malfunctioning and we will attempt an emergency landing.
Luckily, I see an uncharted island below us and we should be able to land on the beach.
However, the odds are that we may never be rescued and will have to live on the island for the rest of our lives.”

Thanks to the skill of the flight crew, the plane landed safely on the island.

An hour later, the husband turned to his wife and asked, “Honey, did we pay the car bill this month?”
“No, sweetheart,” she responded.

Still shaken from the crash landing, he then asked, “did you pay our credit card bill yet?”
“Oh no! I’m sorry. I forgot to send the check.” She said.

“One last thing, did you remember to pay the medical bill for the hospital visit last month? ” he asked.
“Oh, forgive me, sweetheart,” begged the wife. “I didn’t sent hat one, either.”

The husband grabbed her and gave her the biggest hug in 50 years.

She pulled away and asked him, “What was the hug for?”

The husband answered, “Don’t you see? the debt collectors will find us!”
【日本語訳】　必要とされる借金取り

老夫婦が結婚５０年を祝うため2週間のハワイ旅行に、向かっていました。

突然、機長が機内放送を使ってアナウンスを始めました。

「ご搭乗の皆様、大変申し訳ありませんが悪いお知らせがあります。飛行機のエンジンが故障しており、緊急着陸を試みます。

ただし、誰もレスキューに来ず、島で一生暮らさなければならなくなってしまう可能性もあります。」

機長のスキルのお掛けで、飛行機は無事に無人島に着陸出来ました。

1時間後、おじいさんはお婆さんの方を向いて言いました。「ハニー、今月は車のローンを払ったかね？」
「いいえ、あなた」お婆さんは答えました。

緊急着陸にまだ動揺しているおじいさんは、聞きました「カードの支払いはしたかい？」
「あら、ごめんなさい、チェックを送り忘れていたわ。」お婆さんは言いました。

「最後にいいかい、先月の病院の医療費を払うのは覚えていたかい？」おじいさんが聞きました。
「あら、許してちょうだい、あなた。それも送り忘れていたわ」お婆さんがお願いしました。

おじいさんはおばさんをいきなり抱きかかえて、５０年で一番のハグをしました。

お婆さんは一歩引き言いました。「どうしたっていうんだい？」

おじいさんは言いました。「分からないのかい？借金取りが私たちを見つけてくれるんだ！！」
