Woman wakes up from 27-year-long lethargy

The story of Munria Abdulla, a woman in the United Arab Emirates who woke from a 27-year-long stupor, has grabbed international headline. The story first ran in Abu Dhabi’s The National on April 22.
The newspaper says that in 1991, Abdulla was with her son when a school bus collided with their car. Her son, cradled by his mother before the crash, escaped with a bruise to the head.

Abdulla was 32 at the time. That same son, now 32, was quoted saying his mother regained consciousness in a German hospital last year.

A photo shows her in a wheelchair visiting the Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi, where she now resides. During her time in hospitals, she was tube-fed and underwent physiotherapy to prevent her muscles deteriorating.

Friedemann Mueller, the principal consultant at the Schoen Clinic in Bad Aibling, told German news site Spiegel Online that his patient had until recently been in a state of “minimal consciousness,” during which she was ale to open her eyes and briefly focus on something, such as her son’s face.

UAE 女性、昏睡から27年ぶりに目覚める

27年間の混迷状態から目覚めたアラブ首長国連邦（UAE）の女性ムニラ・アブドゥラさんに起こった話は世界中でニュースになった。その話は４月22日にアブダビの『ザ・ナショナル』紙に初めて掲載された。

この新聞によると、1991年にアブドゥラさんは息子と一緒にいて、スクールバスが２人の乗っていた車と衝突した。衝突の前にアブドゥラさんに抱かれていた彼女の息子は、頭に傷を負って脱出した。

アブドゥラさんは当時32歳だった。今32歳の彼女の息子は、母親が昨年、ドイツの病院で意識を取り戻したと語っていると引用された。

１枚の写真には、現在彼女が住んでいるアブダビで、グランドモスクを彼女が車椅子で訪れる様子を示している。入院中には、彼女は管から栄養を与えられ、筋肉が衰えないように理学療法を受けていた。

バート・アイブリングにあるSchoenクリニックで医局長を務めるFriedemann Mueller氏は、ドイツのニュースサイト『シュピーゲル・オンライン』に対し、彼の患者はつい最近まで、目を開けてほんの少し息子の顔などのなにかに焦点を当てられる程度の「最低限の意識」がある状態だったと語った。

Eat, eat, eat; Crowd in Gunma breaks world record with instant noodles

More than 5,000 people gathered in Isesaki, Gunma Prefecture on May 5th to take part in an attempt to break the Guinness World record for the largest instant noodles tasting event.

The Children’s Day event was hosted by noodle maker Maruka Foods. Th noodles were prepared in a huge metal container that resembled one of its Peyoung brand instant noodle packages, but was 1,500 times bigger.

People poured 480 liters of hot water into a container 1.8 meters long and 1.3 meters wide. In just minutes the meal was ready to eat.

The noodles had a total of more than 780,000 calories, and 579 participants managed to eat enough to break the work record.

“I came for the Guinness World Record,” said 15-year-old Takato Kurosawa, who came from neighboring Maebashi with some friends. Two other flavors of instant noodles were also served at the event.

ペヤングのソース焼きそばでギネス認定

群馬県伊勢崎市に5月5日、最大の即席麺の試食イベントのギネス記録を破ろうという試みに参加するために5千人以上が集まった。

子どもの日に開かれたこのイベントは、麺製造会社のまるか食品が主催した。麺は、同社の即席麺ペヤングブランドのパッケージに似ているが大きさは1,500倍の巨大な金属製の容器に用意された。

人々は、長さ1.8メートル、幅1.3メートルの容器に、480リットルのお湯を注いだ。数分後にはその料理は食べられる状態になった。

この麺のカロリーは合計で78万カロリー以上で、579人の参加者が完食し、ギネス記録を破った。

「ギネス世界記録のために来ました」と近所の前橋市から友人らと来ていた黒沢天翔さん（15）は語った。

Now that we have finished the planning phrase, we are eager to get the project off the ground.
 

プランニングの段階は終えたので、我々はプロジェクトの始動に切望している。
  「off the ground」を直訳すると「地上から離す」の意味で、飛行機などの離陸などにも使われる表現です。英語では、「離陸」や「飛ぶ」ことをビジネスの順調な走り出しに使うことがあり他にも「take off：（仕事・計画が）軌道に乗る、」「skyrocket:（需要・指数などが）急激に上昇する」「fly off the shelves：飛ぶように売れる」などがあります。
 
Hands are tied「(何か理由があって)何も出来ないでいる」
In business, sometimes your hands are tied and you have to lower prices as per the competition.
 

ビジネスでは、何も出来ずに競争のため価格を下げざるを得ないことがある。
  「hands are tied」は「手が縛られている」という意味でも使われますが、ビジネスにおいては「（何かしたくても）身動きが出来ない状態」を表します。承認が得られなかったり、問題に対しての解決策が見いだせないなど、自身の処理能力を超えてしまって打つ手がない時によく使われる表現です。
 
ビシネス英会話 In a nutshell 「一言でいえば」
Unemployment is rising and prices are increasing; in a nutshell, the economy is in trouble.
 

失業は増え、物価が上昇している。一言でいえば、経済が危ない。
  「nutshell」は一般に、ナッツ類の堅い外皮を持つ木の実の殻を指す。また、これらの木の実は頑丈な殻の割には小ぶりなものが多いことから、「小さい容器」「狭い場所」という意味でも使われる。「in a nutshell」は、「nutshellに入るくらい少ない言葉で表現すると」という発想から「一言でいえば」という意味で使われる。

数時間後、警官は男を覗いて言いました。「警察庁は娘さんの結婚式に出ているそうだ、ラッキーだったら。言い気分で帰ってくるぞ。」
