Whale tail sculpture saves derailed metro train from disaster

A Dutch metro train has become an unlikely addition to a piece of urban art after it derailed, crashed through safety barriers, and came to a halt on the top of a sculpture of a whale’s tail.
The train passed through a stop block at De Akkers station in Spijkenisse on the outskirts of Rotterdam at around 12:30 AM on Monday morning. It is unclear what caused the accident.

Half of one of the metro carriages came to rest on the sculpture and became stranded around ten metres above the street and surrounding water.

No injuries have been reported for the incident, although the train has suffered extensive damage.

The metro driver was able to get out of the train himself and was taken to hospital as a precaution, according to a spokesman for the Rotterdam transport company, RET.

The driver has since been arrested and is being questioned by police.

Emergency services are busy at the scene and have warned that the rescue operation will take time.

Trains are still able to travel through De Akkers station on Monday, according to a statement by emergency services.

クジラの尻尾が脱線した電車を助ける

オランダの地下鉄があり得ない形で都市芸術の一部に加わった。地下鉄は脱線後、防護柵を突き抜けクジラの銅像の尻尾の上で止まった。

ロッテルダムの郊外にあるスパイケニッセのデ・アッケルス駅で深夜０時３０分頃、電車は停止ブロックを押しのけて通過した。事故の原因は不明だという。

電車の1車両の半分が銅像の上に乗った状態で止まり、周囲の池や道路から高さ１０メートルの位置で身動きが取れなくなった。

事故によるけが人の報告はないが、車両は大きく破損した。

RET（ロッテルダム交通局）の広報によると、車掌は自力で車両から脱出し、念のため病院に搬送された。

車掌は警察に身柄を拘束され、事情聴取を受けている。

救急部隊は現場での対応に追われ、復旧作業には時間がかかると警告した。

月曜日時点で地下鉄はデ・アッケルス駅を通過できている、と緊急部隊は話した。

Japan starts ‘Warm Biz’ campaign to encourage energy-saving in winter

The Japanese government began its annual “Warm Biz” energy-saving campaign on Nov. 2. The campaign encourages people to take environmentally friendly steps in beating the winter cold.

The Warm Biz campaign runs through March. The Environment Ministry is asking people to set their room temperatures at 20 C. Some officials at the ministry wore sweaters while others covered their laps with blankets.

“I want to encourage people to dress warmly so as not to rely on air heating,” said Keiichi Kikuchi, the head of the ministry’s division in charge of the campaign. He also said it was important to have good room ventilation to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus.

The government-led campaign started in 2005 to promote energy conservation to help mitigate global warming. It encourages warm clothing and thermal insulation materials for buildings.

冬の地球温暖化対策、「ウォームビズ」本格スタート

日本政府は、毎年行なっている省エネキャンペーン「ウォームビズ」を11月２日に開始した。このキャンペーンは、人々に環境負荷の少ない冬の寒さに打ち勝つための対策を講じることを推奨する。

「ウォームビズ」キャンペーンは３月まで実施される。環境省は人々に室温を20℃に設定するように呼びかけている。環境省の職員の中にはセーターを来ている人や、足を膝掛けで覆っている人もいる。

「暖房に頼らないように温かい服装をするよう促したい」と環境省でこのキャンペーンを担当するリーダーの菊池圭一氏は述べた。彼は、新型コロナウイルスの感染拡大を防ぐために換気をよくすることも重要だと語った。

この政府主導のキャンペーンは、地球温暖化を軽減するのに役立てるために省エネを推進しようと、2005年に始まった。温かい服装と、建物には断熱材を勧めている。

Twist someone’s arm「圧力をかける、無理強いをする」
The witness was reluctant to cooperate at first, but when the police twisted his arm, he came out with the details.

　「証言者は最初は非協力的だったが、警察に圧力をかけられると詳細を供述した。」
  直訳すると「腕をねじる」という意味ですが、実は誰かに何かを「強制する」時に使われる言い回しです。つまり ”force someone to do something” （＝誰かに何かを強制する）と同じ意味です。腕をねじり上げて、無理やり何かをさせるようなイメージに由来する表現です。
 
Stab someone in the back「裏切る、不意打ちをする」
Voting against the bill on the reservation for the villagers of Scotland at the last minute was a real stab in the back.
 

「土壇場になって、スコットランドの村民への疑念を理由にこの法案に反対することは裏切り行為だ。」
  「人の背中を刺す」と直訳できるこの表現は、人を裏切ることを意味します。特に家族や親友、ビジネスパートナーなど信頼している人から裏切られる意味合いが込めれています。例えば、一緒にビジネスを運営しているパートナーがお金を横領したり、親友が自分の好きな人と付き合ったような状況で、「He stabbed me in the back.（彼は私を裏切りました。）」と表現します。また同じようにbackを使って「Have someone’s back」というと「（人を）守る・助ける / 〜の味方をする」のいみになります。
 
ビシネス英会話 Lose one’s touch「鈍る、腕が鈍る」

「彼女のプレイはどうしちゃったんだ腕が鈍っているようだ。」
  「lose one’s touch」で、 「腕が鈍る」「腕が落ちる」の意味。これまで上手くできていたことが出来なくなってしまったときに使う表現です。似た表現に、「get rusty」があります。こちらも意味はほとんど同じですが、長い間使って（行って）いなかったことに対し、技術が「錆びついてしまう」といった場面で良く使わます。

A man came in and asked to buy half a head of lettuce. The boy told him that they only sold whole heads of lettuce, but the man replied that he did not need a whole head, but only a half head. The boy said he would go ask his manager about the matter.

The boy walked into the back room and said,

“there is some asshole out there who wants to buy only a half a head of lettuce.” As he was finishing saying this he turned around to find the man standing right behind him, so he added, “and this gentleman wants to buy the other half.” The manager okayed the deal and the man went on his way.

Later the manager called on the boy and said,
“you almost got yourself in a lot of trouble earlier, but I must say I was impressed with the way you got yourself out of it. You think on your feet and we like that around here. Where are you from, son?”

They boy replied, “Canada, sir.”

“Oh, really? Why did you leave Canada,” asked the manager.

The boy replied, “They’re all just prostitutes and hockey players up there.”

“My wife is from Canada!!”

The boy replied, “Really! What team did she play for?”
【日本語訳】ピンチの切り抜け方

市場の果物・野菜セクションで働く一人の少年がいました。

ひとりの男性がやってきて、レタスを半分だけ変えるか聞きました。少年はレタスは丸売りしかしていないと言いましたが、男性は全部は必要なく、半分だけ欲しいと答えました。少年は、マネージャーに確認しに行くと言いました。

少年は後ろの事務所に入ると言いました。
「レタスを半分だけ買いたいっていう、嫌な奴がいるよ」といい終える時に振り向くと、さっきの男性がすぐ後ろに立っていることに気づき、こう付け足しました。「で、こちらが残りの半分を買いたいお客様です。」マネージャーは了承し、男性は帰っていきました。

後ほど、マネージャーは男のことを呼び出し言いました。
「さっきは、ピンチだったな。でも、上手くやり過ごした！機転が利くってのは、ここでは重宝される。どこ出身なんだ？」

少年は答えました。「カナダです！」

「おぉ、そうか。なんでカナダを出た？」マネージャーは聞きました。

「カナダには娼婦とホッケー選手しかいないから」と少年は言いました。

「私の妻はカナダ出身だ！！」
