Just as handshaking is an art, it is difficult for Americans to master the art of bowing. It is not an American custom, except for greeting royalty, admitting defeat and accepting applause on stage. Therefore, Americans will tend to either give a cursory nod of the head or a deep bow. They are not used to the fine shades of meaning in the angle of the bow, and they often do not know how to interpret a bow made by a Japanese.
