Turning paralyzed man’s thoughts into speech

U.S. researchers developed a neuroprosthetic device that successfully translated the brain waves of a paralyzed man into complete sentences, according to a scientific paper.
“This is an important technological milestone for a person who cannot communicate naturally,” said David Moses, a postdoctoral engineer at the University of California San Francisco and one of the lead authors of the study in the New England Journal of Medicine.

The breakthrough involved a 36-year-old man who had a stroke when he was 20 that left him with anarthria – the inability to speak intelligibly – even though his cognitive function remained intact.

ある論文によると、アメリカの研究者は麻痺患者の男性の脳信号を翻訳する神経機能代替装置を開発した。

「自然に会話をすることが出来ない人にとって、これは重大な科学的出来事だ」と、カリフォルニア州立大学サンフランシスコ校の博士課程を修了したエンジニアで、ニューイングランド・ジャーナル・オブ・メディシンに掲載された研究の筆頭著者の1人であるデイビット・モーゼス氏は話した。

この躍進には、20歳で脳卒中を患い構語障害（分かりやすく話すことが出来ない状態）が残った３６歳の男性が関わっている。男性の認知機能にはなんの問題もないという。

Tokyo’s teamLab recognized by Guinness World Records as most visited museum in the world

One of the top places Tokyo guidebook will recommend to visit is the teamLab art museums. The art museums are popular with locals and tourists alike, and are considered to be some of Tokyo’s most Instagrammable spots.

TeamLab currently has a number of museums dotted around Japan and has even spread to other countries like the U.S., but the one that started it all was the Mori Building Digital Art Museum: Epson teamLab Borderless, which first opened back in 2018 and was named as one of Time Magazine’s “World’s Greatest Places 2019”.

Borderless has been recognized by Guinness World Records as being the world’s Most Visited Museum featuring art by a single group/person. Records show that during 2019, a record-breaking total number of 2,198,284 people visited the art museum. The museum beat out tough competition, including the Van Gogh Museum in the Netherlands (2,134,778 visitors), the Picasso Museum in Spain (1,072,887 visitors) and the Dali Theatre-Museum in Spain (819,542 visitors).

In response to their world record, a representative from teamLab commented, “teamLab has been using digital technology to create art since 2001, and our work is based on the concept of collaborative creation. We are honored to be recognized by Guinness World Records as the most visited museum in the world, and we hope this experience will help us further explore new perceptions of how we relate to the world.”

チームラボ、世界で最も多い来場者数でギネス記録認定

東京ガイドブックが太鼓判を押す観光地の一つにチームラボがある。同ミュージアムは国内外からの観光客に同様に人気で、東京で最もインスタ映えする観光地のうちに数えられている。

同ミュージアムは現在となっては国内に数か所、またアメリカのように他の国にも拡がっているが、もともとは森ビル・デジタルアートミュージアムから全てが始まった。チームラボ ボーダレスは、２０１８年にオープンし、米雑誌「タイムスマガジン」の「２０１９年版世界で素晴らしい場所」に選ばれた。

ボーダレスは、1団体/個人を特集するミュージアムの中で世界で最も多い来場者を集めたとしてギネス・世界記録に認定されている。記録では、2019年の一年間で新記録となる合計2,198,284人が来場し、手ごわい強豪を破った。（オランダのヴァン・ゴッホ・ミュージアム：2,134,778人、スペインのピカソ・ミュージアム：1，072，887人、スペインのデリ・シアター・ミュージアム：819,542人）

世界記録認定に対して、「チームラボは芸術を創出するために２００１年からデジタルテクノロジーを使用しており、私たちの作品は共創をテーマにしています。世界で一番来場者が多いミュージアムとしてギネス記録に認定されてとても誇りに思います。また、今回の認定をきっかけに、私たちの現実とのかかわり方における新しい観点を一層模索する助けとなればと思います。」と、チームラボの代表はコメントしている。

去年、彼女の夫がクビになったとき、ふたりは経済的に困窮した。なんとか一緒に切り抜けて、前に進む方法を見つけたんだ。
「weather」は、通常は「天気」という名詞で使われることが多いですが、「嵐や困難を切り抜ける」という意味の動詞の用法もあります。もともとは動詞の「weather」も「天気に晒す」という意味で使われていましたが、航海時代に嵐など悪天候に晒させた船が無事帰ってくることに使われるようになり、現在の「危険な出来事を乗り越える」意味でも広く使われるようになりました。
Rain or shine 「何があっても」
I’ll see you at the airport, rain or shine.

いずれにせよ、空港で会おう。
「rain or shine」は、通常の文の最後に付け足して「何があっても、○○」という文を作ります。アウトドアのイベントなどの連絡によく使われる表現で、文字通り「晴でも、雨が降っても」の意味でも使われますが、それ以外のありとあらゆる困難や妨害要素に対しても使われます。また、似た表現に「come hell or high water（地獄や洪水がやってきたとしても）」があり、同じように使われます。
ビシネス英会話 Once in a blue moon　「ごくまれに」
He used to call his grandma once in a blue moon. Now that she has passed away, he regrets not making more of an effort to keep in touch.

彼はごくまれに祖母に電話をかけた。今や彼女は亡くなってしまったので、もっと連絡をとればよかったと後悔している。
「Once in a blue moon」は「ごくまれに」の意味で使われますが、語源には2つの説があります。1つは、実際に月が青く見える時。大気中のちりなどの影響で、月が実際に青く見えることが稀に起こることに由来します。もう1つは、天文学的な満月の周期に由来します。月は1回のサイクルに29.5日を要します。そのため、基本的には１年間を通して12回の満月を見ることが出来ますが、約2年半に一回、年に13回の満月になることがあり、その13回目の満月が「Blue moon」と呼ばれています。長い年月を待たないと「blue moon」がやってこないことから、「ごくまれに」の意味で使われるようになりました。

Reason for asking for a raise

Employee: Excuse me sir, may I talk to you?

Employee: Well sir, as you know, I have been an employee of this prestigious firm for over ten years.

Boss: Taking into account these factors, and considering I don’t want to start a brain drain, I’m willing to offer you a ten percent raise and an extra five days of vacation time. How does that sound?

【日本語訳】　賃上げ交渉の理由

社員: すみません、少しよろしいでしょうか？
ボス: もちろん、入りなさい。どうしたのかな？
社員: はい、ご存じかと思いますが、私はこの素晴らしい会社で10年以上働いています。
ボス: そうだな。
社員: 率直に言いますと、給料を上げてほしいです。現在４つの会社から連絡があったので、まずは先にお話しをいた方が良いかと思いまして。
ボス: 昇給？是非給料を上げてやりたいが、今は難しいな。
