Visitors to Florence,baptistry will be able to see its famous ceiling mosaics up close
The Baptistry of San Giovanni is one of the most iconic monument in Florence, Italy.
Visitors are now getting a once-in-a-lifetime chance to see its ceiling mosaics. And it’s thanks to some out-of-the-box thinking.
The mosaics are being cleaned, a process that will take six years. But the area won’t be closed to the public.
Officials built a 32-meter-high scaffolding platform for the art restorers.The platform will also allow small numbers of visitors to see the ceiling mosaics at eye level. Visits are set to start on Feb. 24 and must be reserved in advance.
The platform will have special routes that will “bring visitors into direct contact with the mosaics,” said Samuele Caciagli, the architect in charge of the restoration site.
The six-year restoration project is the first in over a century at the baptistry.

Japan to downgrade COVID-19 to ‘common infectious disease’
Japan formally decided Jan. 27 to downgrade the legal status of the novel coronavirus on May 8 to “Class 5,” the same category as common infectious diseases such as seasonal influenza, to ease COVID-19 prevention rules, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said.

The reclassification of COVID-19 to Class 5 came after a panel of experts under the health ministry agreed on the plan earlier in the day.
The imminent downgrade would pave the way for a normalization of social and economic activities in Japan. The quarantine period – seven days for those infected with the virus and five for close contacts – will be scrapped.
In Japan, COVID-19 is classified in a category equivalent to Class 2, which covers infectious diseases such as tuberculosis, but allows stricter measures.
The scheduled date of May 8 is the first business day after the end of this year’s Golden Week holidays. It is about 10 days before Japan hosts the Group of Seven summit in Hiroshima for three days through May 21.

Straightには「まっすぐな」以外にも「整理された」「（論理の）欠陥がない」という意味があります。Let me get this straight. 「ちょっと整理させて」なども良く使われる表現です。

A very elderly couple is having an elegant dinner to celebrate their 75th wedding anniversary.
The old man leans forward and says softly to his wife, “Dear, there is something that I must ask you. It has always bothered me that our 10th child never quite looked like the rest of our children.”
“Now I want to assure you that these 75 years have been the most wonderful experience I could have ever hoped for, and your answer cannot take that away. But, I must know, did he have a different father?”
The wife drops her head, unable to look her husband in the eye, she paused for a moment and then confessed. “Yes. Yes he did.”
The old man is very shaken, the reality of what his wife was admitting hit him harder than he had expected.
