(take) care と pay attention の違い

今回はtake careのありがちな間違いを取り上げます。Pay attention(注意を払う)と間違えやすいので、注意が必要です。

☆彼の指示をきちんと聞いていませんでした。　といいたい場合
× I didn’t take care of his directions.
○I didn’t pay attention to his directions.

pay attentionは「何かを意識的に見たり、聞いたりする」ことを示し、take careは「～の世話をする、～を引き受ける」と表現し、ofがその後につきます。

Who takes care of your pets when you are at work?
(あなたが仕事でいないときは、誰がぺっろの世話をするのですか？)

I’ll take care of the hotel reservations.
(私がホテルの予約をしますよ)
