Shortly after moving into a new house, the owners may have a “housewarming” party. They want to show their new residence to their friends, and having a buffet or cocktails is one way to do that. The host will want to guide guests around the house, so there won’t be time for preparing or serving a full sit–down dinner.
If you are invited to such an occasion, it is advisable to pass over gifts that will last only a short time, such as cut flowers, and instead select something that will last, such as potted flowers or plants, tablecloths, place mats, kitchen implements, guest towels or something artistic. It may be of use in the kitchen, bathroom, or garden or to decorate any room of the house. Items from Japan would be particularly appreciated, such as place mats with Japanese designs.
